JOIN THE FASTEST GROWING MARTIAL ART IN THE UK! (UKBJJA).

Our classes are ‘proper’ martial arts classes. They incorporate fitness, agility, technique, and socialism. You will also find that there is no hostility or alter egos amongst our students, on the mats everyone is equal.

Our class format consists of the following;

  • Traditional martial arts fitness warm up / drills (at you own pace/ability).
  • Technique demonstrations and practice with partners.
  • Technique specific sparing / games (subject to confidence).
  • Regular sparing rounds with partners (subject to confidence).
  • Stretch off / cool down.

Although there will be separate self-defense courses run from time-to time, self-defense will come naturally with BJJ. Additionally for those that would like to compete we will be looking at holding inter-club competitions in the future. There are also numerous BJJ competitions on the mainland throughout the UK and the world. We will also be holding seminar events from some top BJJ players.

BJJ GI

This is a Gi (uniform) class, however students can start in other suitable sports wear first, and decide if the the class is for them before purchasing a Gi.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. BJJ focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one’s opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner’s uniform commonly referred to as gi or kimono is similar to a judogi, but with slight differences in the dimensions and often made of lighter material with tighter cuffs on the pants and jacket. This allows the practitioner to benefit from a closer fit, providing less material for an opponent to manipulate. Traditionally, to be promoted in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the wearing of the Jiu-Jitsu gi while training is a requirement. Recently with the growing popularity of “no-gi” Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the practice of giving out belts to no-gi practitioners (e.g., Rolles Gracie awarding Rashad Evans a black belt) has become more common.

There are certain differences between gi jiu-jitsu and “no-gi” jiu-jitsu. In gi jiu-jitsu one can grip an opponent’s uniform, using it to submit or advance position. There are a number of submissions that are specific to the gi, such as the “Loop choke”, “Collar choke”, and others.
